News for November/December

Better late than never? Um, right?

Well, first of all, the major edits are done. I added 5,500 words of new material to the manuscript, did some fine-tuning and a few cuts, and sent the whole thing off to Hachette in mid-November. On the day I finished (or attempted to) there were hellishly loud renovations going on in the apartment downstairs: drills, saws, rotors, everything but a school marching band. Unfortunately...

...I could not venture down to express my displeasure because I was wearing blue pyjamas from Penney's with a pattern of smiling stars and moons. I'd put them on two nights before and vowed to wear nothing else until the book was finished, so...

Then later came the copy edits, which I sent off a couple of weeks ago (mid-December). From there we'll move on to the proofs, and then...and then... I can hardly contemplate it, but it looks like my beloved book will exist in printed form fairly soon. The official publication day is March 1, 2013, also my dad's birthday. Oh, my God. To keep from going mad, I've started a countdown to that date, posting one 80s tune every day until March. You'll find it on this website. A bit daft, perhaps, but when has that ever stopped me?

In December I was interviewed for the Irish Writers' Centre's blog, in part because we forgot to do this in August when news of my offer from Hachette first surfaced. Here's the link if you're interested: Interview joy!

I also wrote an article (The Future, December 12) which appeared as a guest post on, before I retired it to my own blog. Here's what it looked like: Blogness!

And in related news, I am again proud to report that this website has received commendation and approval, this time from John R. Cameron, my dad. As Mr Cameron stated in an email sent earlier this year: 'I investigated a putative website called  "asimplejan". Apart from many lies and deceptions, it was very well done. Is this the work of a major novelist?' High praise indeed.

And finally, Christmas was a time of smiles and joy for me, because my wonderful husband got me this:

Is it the cover? Well, it's close. The cover will be finalised soon, and when that day comes, I intend to plaster this site and most flat surfaces of my home with it. Happy New Year!
